Men's Shirts: The Piece That Anchors More Outfits Than Any Other

A good shirt is the most reliable piece of clothing in a man's wardrobe. It works tucked in with trousers, half-tucked or untucked with jeans, under a suit, under a jumper with just the collar showing, open over a T-shirt as a light layer. The Oxford Shirt

The Oxford cloth button-down (OCBD) is arguably the single most versatile shirt in men's dressing. The basket-weave Oxford fabric is slightly textured and casual in a way that fine poplin is not, the button-down collar works without a tie and holds its shape throughout the day, and the shirt crosses the smart-casual divide more convincingly than almost any other piece. Casual Shirts: Chambray, Flannel, and Linen

Chambray is the lightweight denim-look fabric that works as a casual shirt in warmer weather without the weight of actual denim. Flannel and brushed cotton are autumn and winter casuals — warm, soft, and at home with jeans and boots. Linen is the summer fabric, breathable and cool but requiring acceptance that it will wrinkle — which in linen reads as intentional rather than careless.

Fit

Shirt fit has three main variables: chest and body width, sleeve length, and collar size. The body should fit without pulling across the chest or billowing with excess fabric; the sleeves should end at the wrist bone with half a centimetre of cuff showing below a jacket sleeve; the collar should fasten comfortably with a finger's width of room. Slim-fit shirts are cut closer throughout; classic or regular fit have more room in the body and are better for layering under a jacket. Made-to-measure shirts remove the compromise between these variables if standard sizing never quite works for your proportions.

Care

Shirts reward proper care more than most garments. Cotton and linen shirts should be ironed damp or with steam for the best result — a dry iron on fully dry fabric requires much more effort and produces inferior results. Hang shirts immediately after ironing rather than folding them back into a drawer. Collars and cuffs are the areas that show wear and soil first; a light scrub with a bar of soap or a targeted pre-treatment before washing extends the life of the collar considerably and keeps the shirt looking fresh for longer than it would with standard washing alone. Dry-clean formal shirts only when genuinely necessary — most good cotton shirting washes well at 30–40°C and benefits from a lower temperature that is gentler on the fabric and the seam construction. Removing collar stiffeners before washing is essential; leaving metal stays in the collar through a wash cycle bends them permanently and damages the collar interlining.
